Active Minds History

Chapter History

Active Minds at UC Davis began in 2013 to help lower the negative stigma behind mental illnesses on our campus. Since it's start over 2 years ago it has gained over 100 members and put on 5+ campus wide events each year (including National Day without stigma, Operation Beautiful for Eating Disorders Awareness Week, End the Silence, etc). As well as getting involved on campus, Active Minds attends the Downtown Farmers Market weekly to reach out to the Davis Community and combines with other Mental Health Awareness Clubs to provide local High School's with a Mental Health Education Program. The Club is based on the National Organization Active Minds. Similarly to the National Organization, our ultimate goal is to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses and end the stigma behind mental illnesses.

National History

Active Minds was started by Alison Malmon at the Unviersity of Pennsylvania in 2000 after her brother lost his life to suicide. She realized very few students felt comfortable talking about mental health on campus. She wanted to combat the negative opinion college students had of mental illnesses by starting the conversation about mental health early and normalizing it with the Club Active Minds. As the club grew and expanded on to other campuses it established its national headquarter in Washington DC in 2003. The non profit organization now has over 400 college chapters across the country and is a highly respected advocacy organization in the field of psychology and mental health. We are proud to be associated with such a successful and powerful organization as we at UC Davis begin our goal for mental health advocacy.
